To North Carolina residents (primarily), please sign this petition:
Gaston County, North Carolina - This shelter is still reserving the right to use the gas chamber to kill animals they "feel" are feral, aggressive, or anti-social, which is also TYPICAL SHELTER BEHAVIOR for any animal. Even if the animals truly fit this criteria, it's still completely inhumane and barbaric to kill in this manner.
Gassing animals to death is painful, cruel, and barbaric. It should be illegal in every state-in every country. Historically, this inhumane method of killing was used by the Nazis, and to this day is not allowed even for the punishment of our most severe serial killers. Yet in NC and some other states the local and government officials continue to choose to kill animals in this horrific manner. In fact, North Carolina is one of the worst offenders when it comes to killing animals in gas chambers (Texas too).
The Association of Shelter Veterinarians has stated, "...the use of carbon monoxide for individual or mass companion animal euthanasia in shelters is unacceptable due to significant humane, operational and safety concerns." Please read their document available online at:http://www.sheltervet.org/associations/4853/files/CO%20Position%20Statement.pdf
HSUS states, "Carbon monoxide (CO) gas is, without question, an unacceptable method of euthanasia in states where shelters can legally obtain and administer sodium pentobarbital." Source: http://www.animalsheltering.org/resource_library/policies_and_guidelines/statement_on_euthanasia.html
The mayor,  Rick CColeman Mayor of DallasNC, does not appear to post an email address for comments. Maybe I missed it.
Please sign this petition and send a letter to North Carolina officials to tell them to dismantle the gas chamber NOW.
